The Green Space Tech Urban Farm initiative is an exciting new venture from the Phosphate Resources Group (PRG). Through this project, PRG hopes to overcome a major challenge to Christmas Island’s sustainability by improving and increasing the availability of fresh food.
Both Christmas and Cocos Keeling Islands, (Indian Ocean Territories), rely almost entirely on fresh food being flown in from the Australian mainland. The produce is expensive and often of poor quality. The freight component also contributes to increased carbon emissions.
The Green Space Tech Urban Farm initiative aims to produce fresh food for the Christmas Island community via controlled-environment greenhouses and state-of-the-art hydroponic systems. The plan is to use technology to increase the amount and quality of locally grown produce.
